I have been a lifelong lover of the arts, dance, in particularly, as I participated in several amateur dance groups myself. So, in the mid-2000s, when I heard about a performance by a new (to me) company called Inlet Dance Theatre, I enthusiastically jumped at the chance to attend. Well, I was enthralled from that first performance – this was not just any modern dance company. The creativity (and difficulty!) of movement, as well as the high degree of quality captured me and continues to impress me still.
Something I have come to appreciate even more, especially since joining the Board, is Inlet’s sense of boldness, specifically, in tackling serious social issues. Yet, while the company has the confidence to successfully convey powerful and serious social messages for some works, it just as successfully retains a playful and lighthearted style for others. Regardless of the theme of the performance, Inlet always elicits an emotional response – anywhere from tears of sadness to tears of laughter – from its audience.
On a personal note, my day job in the financial services industry leaves little room for creativity (and no demand for dancing, sadly). So, being able to combine my financial background and love for dance has been a fulfilling endeavor. It has allowed me to contribute to a (perhaps) more mundane, yet critical function of this organization. Just another way that “using dance to further people” has furthered this person.
