On September 15, creator Dominic Moore-Dunson with co-creator Kevin Parker premiered the evening-length work, “The ‘Black Card’ Project” (produced by Inlet Dance Theatre and funded by the Knight Arts Challenge Grant). The premiere was in the beautiful Linda B. Kersker Auditorium in Firestone Community Learning Center. The students from both Firestone Community Learning Center and from Miller South Visual Performing Arts were actually involved in the art-making process for the show and saw a sneak-peak preview on Friday, Sept. 14! The audiences on both Friday and Saturday were completely engaged for the duration of the show and jumped to their feet for a rousing standing ovation.
Stay tuned for where you can see the show next, and as always, connect with “The Black Card Project” on social media: @theblackcardproject on Instagram and @blackcardproject on Facebook!
But for now, here’s a message from the creator, Dominic:
“Wow! What a ride! This project took me 2.5 years to bring to the community and this past weekend was worth every moment and through this process. But I didn’t achieve any of this on my own!
First I would love to thank Bill Wade & Inlet Dance Theatre for being such a supportive group of fellow artists since the moment I walked in the studio 9 years ago. I want to give a shout out to Katie McGaha for killing the social media marketing for this project/event! And Bill, thank you for spending the long hard hours with me (going through choreography, budgets, music, NAS homework, IPAY, etc) and believing in my talents and vision. Artist my age are rarely given the opportunity to grow at the rate & length at which you’ve helped me. THANK YOU.
I would like to thank the John S. And James L. Knight Foundation for funding The Black Card Project through the Knights Arts Challenge Grant. The support you give the arts & culture sector in Akron continue to show the value and importance the arts has in our community.
For the rest of our collaborators: International Performing Arts for Youth, National Arts Strategies, Cleveland Public Theatre, Akron School for the Arts @ Firestone Community Learning Center, Miller-South Visual Performing Arts, The Devil Strip, Playhouse Square, The Lillian and Betty Ratner Montessori School, and The Goodyear Black Network, a group that we connected to and got involved in the creative process. Thank you for helping in the creation, marketing, and/or presenting the show.
A special thank you to my family Elaine Moore, Viola Moore, and Nakiasha Moore-Dunson for believing in me since the moment you met me 28 years ago. Without the 3 of you, this show never exists and neither does the journey I am on in my career. THANK YOU.
To Ms. Ashley Ruppert, (soon to be Moore-Dunson), I don’t even have words for the role you’ve had in the creation of this show. The mental, emotional, physical, and intellectual support you’ve given me is unparalleled. On top of that, you’ve given me the time to create this while you’ve been creating our entire wedding day. You’re the “real MVP.” THANK YOU.
And finally, to my partner in crime, Kevin Parker. Man, who ever thought the night we spent at Applebee’s talking about this show for the first time would turn into what we did this past weekend. You kept me grounded as my “idea regulator” the whole way through. To jump onboard this roller coaster not knowing where we would end up is true bravery. You are an incredible artist and a world class man. You my boy Kev…and that statement goes deeper than most will ever understand.
With Love,
Dominic Moore-Dunson”
