Inlet’s educational programs are all coming to an end with culminating performances, concerts, and showcases. Before Inlet’s Summer Dance Intensives start up, we want to take a moment to reflect on the year.
Inlet has been teaching an in-school dance program and an after-school dance program (Newton D. Baker Student Dance Ensemble) at Newton D. Baker School for the Arts for the 2017-2018 academic year. The dance students all joined together at the school on Tuesday, May 15, to perform in the culminating performances involving all students at the school. In addition, the Newton D. Baker Student Dance Ensemble has performed 3 other performances in the month of May. First they were involved Inlet’s annual Educational Matinee on May 5. Then, they performed at Kamm’s Corner’s annual Hooley Festival on May 12 (in the pouring rain–kudo’s to the students for still performing). And then lastly, at the Rock Your World STEAM Family Festival at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, May 19.
Inlet has been finishing up at Boys & GirlsClub from Franklin D. Roosevelt Elementary and from Walton Elementary. The Boys and GirlsClub students performed at Inlet’s Educational Matinee on May 5, as well. They also had a culminating performance showcase on May 9 where the theme of the evening was “empathy”. The students at FDR Elementary used movement phrases from the semester to base a piece off of this theme to the song “Sittin’ On The Dock of the Bay”. The students at Walton Elementary performed to live accompaniment at the showcase. The students at Walton then performed at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on May 9.
In addition to students from Newton D. Baker and the Boys & Girls Club, many others gathered on May 5 for Inlet’s Educational Matinee at the Snow Road Library in Parma, OH. Students from The Music Settlement, the Lillian Betty & Ranter School, students from Miller South Visual & Performing Arts, and Akron School for the Arts all performed their culminating performance. Each group performed a different dance filled with skills they have been specifically working on through the year. Inlet’s Trainee & Apprentice Program performed “Motherless Child,” and premiered, “Though I Walk” (choreographed by Company Member Erin Pennebaker). Inlet’s Educational Matinee not only allows students the opportunity to perform all they have worked on, but they come together with students from all over the Cleveland/Akron area sharing similar experiences and knowledge about dance as an art form. They share the stage together and with the pre-professional dancers in Inlet’s training program. It truly is an unforgettable afternoon each year. We already cannot wait to see what next year’s educational connections hold.
