This month, we are featuring one of our new Trainee’s for the year, Darcie Lemons. Originally from Marysville, OH Darcie recently moved to Cleveland and has been training with Inlet Dance Theatre since September 2017. Here’s a little about her:
What is your dance/theatre background?
I started dancing when I was nine in my hometown, Marysville, OH at the local dance studio, Patty Beery’s School of Dance. I began with tap then added every style offered there including: jazz, ballet, lyrical and eventually Pointe. Dance started to play an important role in my life, and basically a part of my identity. When it was time to figure out what I wanted to do with my life, I decided dancing was the route I wanted to take. However, I knew I needed more training and experience before entering the real world, which led me to the dance program at The University of Akron. At Akron, I experienced Modern dance for the first time, had the opportunity to choreograph, perform in many productions and learn from some pretty great people. In 2015, I graduated Summa Cum Laude with my Bachelor of Arts degree in Dance Education. After graduating, I spent a season with Dayton Contemporary Dance Company’s second company, and then a season with Modern dance company- RED, Real Edge Dance.
How did you come to realize Inlet was the place for you this year? (AND) Where do you see yourself going with Inlet?
After college, I struggled with finding a “dance home” that felt right for me. I was seeking an environment (close to the people I love) that I could grow in, as a dancer and also as a person. Feeling a bit fed up and overwhelmed, I was debating possibly changing to a different career path, but then I discovered Inlet. I was drawn to them because of their philosophy of using dance to serve and further others (and also their cool repertory and non-traditional partnering skills). I loved this philosophy…and I knew this was an organization I wanted to be a part of, so here I am! I hope to learn as much as I can during my time with Inlet and see where this experience leads me. If anything, post-grad life I’ve learned I often get stuck on the end result or final destination but it’s important to enjoy the journey, and live in the moment, that’s where the good stuff happens… So it’s my goal right now to really listen and learn from everyone at Inlet, and I hope to be around for quite a while!
What is your biggest dream (I.E. “When I grow up, I want to be…)?
When I was younger, I used to want to be an accountant (who knows why??) As a kid (and still now), I was really into planning, organization, and numbers. But really my dream is be doing exactly what I’m doing now– dancing, learning and teaching dance to kids.
What is your favorite hobby other than dance?
Other than dance, I enjoy organizing things, reading, baking and watching Netflix (when I have the time!)
