This month, we are featuring one of our new Apprentice’s for the year, Amy Larson. Originally from Wisconsin, Amy recently moved to Oberlin, OH and has been training with inlet Dance Theatre since September 2017. Here’s a little about her:
What is your dance/theatre background? How did you come to realize Inlet was the place for you this year? Where do you see yourself going with Inlet? I grew up outside of Madison, WI taking all kinds of dance classes at a few local studios. I basically danced as much as I could—tap, jazz, ballet. I went on to study dance at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point which is where I discovered modern dance for the first time and truly fell in love. After graduating, I followed this love for modern dance all the way to New York City. While I was out there, I continued training and worked as a freelance modern dancer for a number choreographers. I also became a Pilates instructor which for me is very much related to my dance background. One of the things that I’ve always been most drawn to within dance is the way that the body actually moves and works. I love that I now get to share that information with so many other dancers and non-dancers through my Pilates teaching practice. After spending 7 amazing, yet challenging years in New York City, my husband landed a job in the Cleveland area. I wasn’t quite ready to leave the city and was honestly worried that I wouldn’t find a new dance community to call home. But boy was I wrong! I have been graciously welcomed into the wonderful community that is Inlet Dance Theatre! The work that Inlet does is quite different than what I’ve done in the past and that’s how I knew this was the place for me this year—a place where I can learn and gather new information. As long as I’m here in Cleveland, I hope to continue growing as a dancer and am honored and excited to do that alongside the other members of Inlet. I hope to have many opportunities to share the stage with these talented individuals.
What is your biggest dream? Honestly, I’m not a big dreamer—I’m really quite practical so as cheesy as it may sound, my biggest dream is to keep moving through this life and to be happy and healthy.
What is your favorite hobby other than dance? Is sleep considered a hobby? Just kidding..kind of. But really, when I’m not dancing or teaching Pilates, I like to cook dinner with my husband, binge watch some television shows and sleep, a lot. I also like to practice yoga and go hiking!
