Every year, Inlet teaches multiple residencies all over the city of Cleveland; some of which are year-long, and others are for shorter periods of time. No matter the duration, this has always been as strong focus for Inlet’s organization. Inlet’s motto: using dance to further people, gives us the ability to have quality connections with students of all ages, bettering themselves as they grow. Dance is just the medium in which we do this.
Below are some of the residencies that Inlet is apart of this year. Inlet is extremely thankful to work with all different ages from all over Northeast Ohio and the greater Cleveland area.
On Monday evenings from 5:30pm – 6:30pm at the Idea Center Gund Dance Studio in Playhouse Square, Company Members Dominic Moore-Dunson and Emily Stonecipher lead the students from various Boys & Girls Club locations through dance classes taught from an Improvisational basis. The students are preparing throughout this year for the annual Winter Showcase on December 9 where they will perform alongside fellow club mates who focused in other genres of art. In the spring, the participating students will be asked to perform in Inlet’s Educational Matinee featuring all of the students involved with Inlet’s multiple outreach programs (details to come). This is the 2nd year Inlet has worked with the Boys & Girls Club.
Newton D. Baker School of Arts
On Tuesdays, Company Members Katie McGaha and Nicole Kapantas engage with the students of Newton D. Baker School of Arts from 9:10am – 3:40pm through classes based on improvisations & developing creativity and voice. After school, on Tuesdays & Thursdays from 3:45pm – 5:00pm, Company Members Emily Stonecipher and Elizabeth Pollert work with those who signed up for the after-school dance program teaching Non-Traditional Partnering. All of these students will be performing December 19 for an in-school program showcasing all of the different arts on the school’s campus. Then, in the spring, the students in the after-school program will be invited to perform in Inlet’s Educational Matinee featuring the students in Inlet’s multiple outreach programs. This is Inlet’s 2nd year at Newton D. Baker School of Arts.
Shaker Heights High School Theatre Ensemble
For the next few weeks, Company Member and Shaker Heights High School Alumni Kevin Parker is working with the students of the Theatre Ensemble program on Thursdays from 3:30pm – 5:30pm. The students are performing “Sense and Sensibility,” which involves various partnering moments and stage movement. The performance is Nov. 16 & Nov. 17 at Shaker Heights High School.
The Lillian & Betty Ratner School
On Thursdays from 3:45pm – 4:45pm, Company Members Kevin Parker and Dominic Moore-Dunson lead the students of The Lillian & Betty Ratner School in classes on Improvisation and character development, this year focusing on Dr. Seuss characters. These students will also be invited to perform at Inlet’s Educational Matinee in the spring. This is Inlet’s 5th year returning the The Lillian and Betty Ranter School.
Inlet teaches multiple different types of classes connected with The Music Settlement. On Monday nights, Inlet teaches Modern (5:30pm) which will instruct students in modern dance, specifically Hawkins-based Release Technique. Classes begin seated on the floor, progressing to exercises standing in the center and then to movement combinations across the floor. The 7:00pm classes focus on the foundations of Dance Improvisation & Non Traditional Partnering. These classes are open to ages 12 and up.
On Tuesdays, Inlet teaches the Dance Explorers class. This introduction to dance is designed to give children well-rounded and developmentally appropriate training. Modern dance techniques with simple coordination, rhythm and creative problem solving instructions encourage students to explore space, movement and have fun with dance exercises. Pre-K Preschool or Day School & Kindergarten Early Childhood students, only.
Then, throughout the week, Inlet works with the students of the Early Learning Initiative (ELI) program for Lorain County School children. Inlet will show excerpts from our work in progress, “What Do You Do With An Idea?” (based on the NY Times Best Seller, “What Do You Do With An Idea?” written by Kobi Yamada and illustrated by Mae Besom). Then following the demonstration, the students/teachers/parents are invited to participate movement class inspired by images from the book.
For more information, or to register for any of these classes at The Music Settlement, contact Inflow Education Coordinator Elizabeth Pollert at info@inletdance.org.
We hope to see you in the spring at the Inlet Educational Matinee (details to come) so you can see all the hard work pay off for these talented students!
